a response to a news report and on civilians caught up in war - focused on individual moments of resilience that reveal an incredible strength to challenge and confront
aleppo, 2016, and in a landscape of unbearable destruction an elderly man and a young boy inflate and release balloons, each of which has a nail attached - as they float upwards and into the paths of attacking planes, playthings become the only available weapons of resistance
the balloon symbolises opposites: fear and courage; light and darkness; substance and weightlessness
